TRIP ESSENTIALS
Overview
This 2-day itinerary offers a deep immersion into the nomadic traditions of Kyrgyzstan. You will explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Burana Tower,
hike through the geological formations of Kok-Moynok Canyon, and spend a night at Song-Kol Lake. Located at 3,016 meters, this alpine lake is a center for nomadic lifestyle where shepherds spend their summers in traditional felt yurts. This tour is designed for travelers seeking a balance of history, nature, and authentic cultural exchange.
Day 1. Bishkek – Burana Tower – Kochkor – Song-Kol Lake
The journey starts with a drive from Bishkek toward the Chuy Valley. Our first visit is the Burana Tower historical complex to see the 11th-century minaret and the ancient stone warriors known as balbals. After the visit, we continue to Kochkor village for a traditional lunch with a local family. In the afternoon, the route leads into the mountains, crossing the Kalmak-Ashuu pass. Upon arrival at Song-Kol Lake, you will be welcomed into a yurt camp. The evening is free to walk along the shore, observe the grazing horses, and enjoy dinner in a nomadic setting.

Special information
Today involves approximately 6 hours of driving (280 km) via the Kalmak-Ashuu Pass (3,446 m). Due to the high altitude, it can be quite cold in the evenings, so please have your warm clothes ready. At the lake, experience a true disconnect: there is no mobile signal and electricity is limited, so ensure your power banks are fully charged. Facilities tonight are basic, with shared outdoor bathrooms and no showers.
Day 2. Song-Kol Lake – Kok-Moynok Canyon – Bishkek
After breakfast at the camp, you will have free time to explore the high-altitude pastures or interact with the local shepherds. Optional horse riding can be arranged on-site for those interested. Later, we begin our descent through the mountain passes toward the Boom Gorge. We will stop to explore Kok-Moynok Canyon, walking through its unique orange clay corridors and dry riverbeds. After a stop for lunch, we continue the drive back to the capital. The tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel in Bishkek.

Special information
Today involves approximately 6 hours of driving (320 km). The stop at Kok-Moynok Canyon includes a 1-hour walk. We expect to arrive in Bishkek between
18:00 and 19:00, depending on traffic.
