Ala-Kul is a bright turquoise lake hidden at 3,500 meters. It is one of the most beautiful spots in the country, but you can only get here by foot or on horseback. It is a place you have to “earn.”
A Challenging Journey. The hike is a steep climb past forests and waterfalls. The most iconic moment is reaching the Ala-Kul Pass (3,900m). From the top, the blue lake is right below you, surrounded by massive snowy peaks of the Terskey Alatau range.
The Changing Colors. The name means “Colorful Lake.” The water shifts from light blue to deep violet depending on the sun. It is a glacial lake, so the water is freezing cold even in the middle of summer.
The Trekking Experience. Most people visit Ala-Kul as a 3-day trek and end the trip in the Altyn-Arashan valley. The weather can change in minutes, and the trails are very steep, so it is important to be well-prepared with the right gear.
