TRIP ESSENTIALS
Overview
This 7-day cross-border tour combines the natural highlights and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Starting in Almaty and ending in Bishkek, the journey includes dramatic landscapes, mountain lakes, and traditional village life. Travelers will explore Charyn Canyon, Kolsay and Kaindy Lakes, cross the scenic Karkara border, and continue to the alpine meadows of Altyn-Arashan and the southern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. The tour features comfortable 4×4 transportation, local guesthouse stays, cultural experiences, and balanced travel days, making it an ideal choice for those seeking both
adventure and cultural discovery in Central Asia.
Day 1. Almaty – Charyn Canyon – Saty Village
Your journey begins in Almaty with a scenic drive to Charyn Canyon, often referred to as Central Asia’s “mini Grand Canyon.” Upon arrival, you’ll explore the breathtaking Valley of Castles, hiking approximately 2 to 3 kilometers through surreal red rock formations. A scenic picnic lunch will be served in the canyon before continuing toward the mountain village of Saty. In the evening, arrive at a cozy guesthouse for a home-cooked Kazakh dinner.

Special information
Today involves approximately 4–5 hours of driving (300 km)
Day 2. Saty – Kolsay – Kaindy Lakes
Morning head to the Kolsay Lakes, the “blue necklace” of the Tian-Shan. Take a walk along the shore and enjoy the peaceful forest views. After lunch, drive to Kaindy Lake in a local 4×4 vehicle. The lake is famous for its turquoise water and sunken pine trees rising above the surface, formed by a landslide in 1911. Return to Saty Village for a homemade dinner.

Special information
The drive to Kaindy Lake is on a bumpy forest road in a local 4×4 vehicle (UAZ)—it’s a short but shaky off-road experience.
Day 3. Saty – Karkara Border – Karakol
We cross the remote Karkara border into Kyrgyzstan. The landscape shifts as we enter the Tup valley, arriving in the historic town of Karakol. In the afternoon, we visit the Dungan Mosque (built without nails) and the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Cathedral.

Special information
Today involves an international border crossing. You must carry your own luggage through customs on foot (approx. 300m). Total drive time is 4–5 hours
(240 km)
Day 4. Karakol – Altyn-Arashan – Karakol
Today is all about the high mountains. We switch to a specialized heavy-duty 4×4 vehicle for a rugged climb to the Altyn-Arashan Valley (2,600m). The drive passes through pine forests and along a rushing river. At the top, you can enjoy views of the Palatka Peak and relax in natural hot sulfur springs (indoor baths). In the late afternoon, we descend back to Karakol.

Special information
The round-trip drive takes about 3.5 hours. The road is extremely bumpy and rocky, so please be prepared for a rough mountain ride.
Day 5. Karakol – Jeti-Oguz – Skazka Canyon – Bokonbaevo
Travel along the southern shore of the deep blue Issyk-Kul Lake. Stop at Jeti-Oguz to see the “Seven Bulls” sandstone cliffs. In the afternoon, explore the colorful formations of Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon. We finish the day in Bokonbaevo for an eagle hunting demonstration and a stay with a local family.

Special information
Today involves several scenic stops along the lake (190 km, 3-4 hours of driving).
Day 6. Bokonbaevo – Ak-Say Canyon – Chon-Kemin Valley
Before leaving the lake shore, we visit the Ak-Say Canyon for a short hike to a viewpoint overlooking the azure waters of Issyk-Kul. Afterward, we drive to the lush Chon-Kemin Valley. This area is a protected national park known for its beautiful mountain landscapes and traditional rural hospitality. Enjoy a quiet evening in a boutique guesthouse.

Day 7. Chon-Kemin – Burana Tower – Bishkek

We will visit Ala-Too Square and, if time allows, the vibrant Osh Bazaar for souvenirs. The tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
